As you visit the Thomas Johnson Polygonal Barn at the Washington County Fair this week you might notice a new addition to the fairgrounds.

A windmill that was built prior to 1911 has been installed on the south side of the barn. The windmill was a donation according to fair board member Don Lewis, and he says it is a rare find as it is three legged. Lewis says it was a perfect addition to the polygonal barn area, where the fair board is working on creating a memorial garden. Lewis describes the project, “We’re going to have a beautiful memorial flower garden that anybody can donate to and it’s going to have a bridge over running water. And we’re going to have the water running out of the pump from the windmill and it’ll be going into this 9 or 10 foot long over rocks and recirculate. And then of course there’s going to be all kinds of flowers and the stepping stones to go throughout the garden.”

Lewis also mentions on the north side of the polygonal barn will be a vine-covered metal tunnel for kids to climb through and benches. The fair board hopes to start work on this garden after this year’s fair. Designs for the garden are on display outside the polygonal barn this week at the Washington County Fair.
