The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk football team is on the road for the second straight week when they travel to Pekin Friday to take on the Panthers.

The Golden Hawks fell in their season opener last Friday in Grinnell 27-12, despite holding a 12-6 lead midway through the second quarter.

In week one, the Golden Hawk offense put up 282 yards, led by Brad Tornow who was 13 of 31 through the air for 143 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Justin Schwartz led the way on the ground with 18 carries for 95 yards. Grant Boyse had seven carries for 80 yards and a touchdown. Boyse added a pair of catches for 68 yards, including a 53 yard touchdown. Schwartz had seven grabs for 66 yards. Defensively Jack Baker and Grant Boyse each had 6.5 tackles.

Pekin was a winner in their season opener at Sigourney last Friday 31-12. Dayne Eckley rolled on the ground with 27 carries for 302 yards and three touchdowns. Through the air Caleb Comstock was four of six for 76 yards. Conner Reed hauled in a pair of passes for 57 yards. Tanner Bainbridge led the Panther defense with seven total tackles. This week, Mid-Prairie head coach Pete Cavanagh talked about facing the Panthers and looking to improve in week two. “We had a real problem with getting in a stance, getting aligned correctly. We have gone back and put an emphasis on the small details. From a certain standpoint Pekin is kind of looking in the mirror. They run similar stuff to us, a lot of power, power I, and play action pass so, we’ve gone back to being able to stop the run. Defensively they are super aggressive. It’s a school with a proud football tradition so it should be a great game.”
