In less than two weeks the new Kalona Community Center will be open for residents and YMCA members to use.

Work began on the $5.3 million facility in July 2017, which was funded in part by a $3.9 million bond issue passed by Kalona residents. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh gives an update on the center, “We just had the State Fire Marshal here yesterday so he gave us an occupancy permit, pending a couple permits that we need to provide from our building inspector. And we tested fire alarms, sprinkler systems, all that, everything’s being monitored by the Washington County 911/Communications Center so all that’s been rolled over to them. We’re doing the finishing touches getting the building cleaned up, the last of the construction, floor coverings,. and then the next couple weeks it will be getting all the new equipment in here and getting some of the other amenities that will be here in the building.”

An open house will be held for the facility on Saturday, August 25th from 1-4 p.m. with the ribbon cutting ceremony at 1:30 p.m. YMCA and city staff will be available throughout the facility during the open house to answer any questions about the facility or talk about membership options. The community center will then open on Monday, August 27th.
