The Mid-Prairie School Board approved extending the Instructional Support Levy for another five years.

A public hearing was held for the resolution at their recent meeting in which no comments were heard. The board voted unanimously to continue the levy, which was voted for 10 years ago in a public election. The levy gives approximately $647,000 which can be used for any purpose allowed from the district’s general fund.

Business Manager Jeff Swartzentruber says about 80% of the levy funds nine teaching positions in the district, “Of the 330 school districts in the state of Iowa, 329 of them are using Instructional Support Levy. There’s only one district now that doesn’t implement Instructional Support Levy, which is really indicative of the fact that schools have recognized that this is not a ‘nice to have’ kind of funding, but it’s becoming more critical to have that as part of the funding for the district.”

The public has the right to petition for a special election to decide if the levy continues until September 10th. If not, the resolution will then become effective on September 11th for continuance on July 1st.
