Whether they’re a comic book character, a volunteer first responder, or an armed services member, “Everybody Needs A Hero” is what the City of Winfield is celebrating as their theme for this year’s Crooked Creek Days.

The weekend festival returns with a variety of unique events including the cardboard boat regatta, craftiest chair contest, and the frozen t-shirt contest. Honoring a deceased member of the community, Mayor Chris Finnell comments on the Darrell Hewitt Memorial Fireworks display happening at the Twin Lakes Country Club Sunday night, “I think we’ve got some really good fireworks. Every year they’ve gotten a little bit better I hear that this year they’re going to be even better than the last couple. They’ve really worked hard, the committee, on fundraising to get the money to do it and they’ve got quite a fireworks display I’ve been told it can compare easily with an Iowa City or Cedar Rapids display.”

New events include family friendly and adult street dances; kids activities such as a tug of war, water balloon toss, and bags tournament; bingo; and a horseshoe tournament. The Big Red Radio will be broadcasting live from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in Winfield at Crooked Creek Days as part of the KCII Summer Town Tour.
