In a soggy, muddy, messy night at Dwight G. Sattler Field in Wellman, the No. 9 Wilton Beavers got a grind it out win over Mid-Prairie 22-6.

In a game heard on KCII, it was the Golden Hawks that got on the board first. Mid-Prairie went to the trickery on the first play from scrimmage running a wide receiver reverse pass that saw Justin Schwartz go up top to Tom Butters who raced 67 yards for the score and a 6-0 Mid-Prairie lead. Wilton answered with a methodical 11 play 78 yard drive, finished off by a Jerome Mays 12 yard scramble on fourth and goal to give Wilton the 8-6 lead. After a Mid-Prairie punt, the Beavers marched 65 yards on eight plays with Brian Stillman getting to the end zone from five yards out to make it 14-6, that’s where the score would stand at half. In the second half Mays gave the Beavers an insurance touchdown on a seven yard run to finish a 10 play 69 yard drive in third quarter.

From there both defenses dug in and the Hawks weren’t able to get much traction on a messy field for their comeback attempt. The Beavers had 18 first downs to Mid-Prairie’s four. The Hawks were outgained on the ground 329 to -8 and 352 to 102 on the night in total. Jerome Mays had 31 carries for 212 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Wilton. Collin McCrabb added 28 carries for 109 yards. Justin Schwartz led the Hawks on the ground with nine carries for 14 yards. Brad Tornow was five of 16 through the air for 45 yards. With the loss, Mid-Prairie falls to 0-3 on the year. They will next be in action Friday when they travel to Iowa City Liberty.
