Washington Middle School students far surpassed their goal of donating 1500 diapers to HACAP this week. The Builders Club held a diaper drive and collected 4,065 diapers. Art teacher Erin Almelien states, “Statistics show that one in three families struggle to buy diapers and there is no assistance programs to help families with diapers. Babies require up to 12 diapers per day, at a cost of $70-$80 per month per baby. As we all know the longer a baby sits in a dirty diaper the more likely they will develop diaper rash and may need medical attention.”

She adds, the closest diaper bank in the area is in Cedar Rapids. So the 55 members of the Builders Club wanted to help local families. The students worked with the Kiwanis AMers to gather diapers with collection boxes at area businesses. The more than 4,000 diapers were taken to HACAP in Washington Monday.
