October 21-27 is National Teen Driver Week which is dedicated to talking to teens about safe driving habits as car crashes are the leading cause of death in teens 15-18 years old, according to the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

In 2016, there were 2,288 people killed in crashes involving a teen driver. It is important to have dialogue with your teen about the dangers of driving and instill good habits. The most common cause for fatal accidents in teens, according to the IDPS, is driving under the influence, which accounts for 1 of 5 of fatal teen crashes. Seat-belts can also be the difference between life and death, and that starts with the driver. In 85% of cases where the teen driver is not wearing their seat-belt, the passengers are also forgoing their seat-belt.
