Vanessa Espinoza of Columbus Junction is being given the first Iowa Latinx Youth Leadership Award from The Iowa Department of Human Rights and the Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs.

Espinoza has been on a mission to create a better place for others since her junior year in high school in Columbus Junction. She created a literacy program for Latinx adults in her community. Her work earned her the Herbert Hoover Uncommon Students Award and the Mariah Becker Volunteer Leadership Award. Her work continued into her time at the University of Northern Iowa and now into her professional career, including the creation of the Vanessa Espinoza Scholarship for Latinx students who have dealt with adversity. She is also a co-founder of Latinos for Washington. Espinoza will receive her award at the Iowa Latino Hall of Fame induction ceremony this Saturday at the Iowa State Historical Building in Des Moines.
