Thanksgiving is a time for family and giving thanks, but the holiday brings its own safety risks.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency, Thanksgiving is the number one day for home cooking fires. Ainsworth Fire Chief Waylon Schultz says a big danger is using a fryer to cook the traditional bird. He says there are steps to make this as safe as can be, “Make sure that turkey is getting thawed out before you put it in the fryer. And if you are using a fryer, use it not on top of your deck, use it out on a concrete driveway and away from the house.” Schultz adds that it’s important to not overuse power outlets by using unnecessary power strips.
