Local authorities will have increased traffic enforcement during the holidays. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Washington Police Department are encouraging drivers and passengers to use seat belts, have a designated driver, and be safe over Thanksgiving. According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, proper seat belt use reduces the risk of fatal injury to front seat passengers by 45 percent. Also, only one percent of occupants wearing seat belts were ejected in fatal crashes in 2016. Thanksgiving weekend is the busiest travel weekend and last year four Iowans were killed in traffic crashes. Remember to buckle your seat belt, even for short distances.
