A program to promote early literacy at St. James Elementary School in Washington has received a funding boost. St. Vincent’s Home Board awarded the preschool $500. Dual language books will be purchased with the grant money. The books can be checked out to children on a weekly basis and taken home for families to read together. Each book bag will contain a children’s book, both fiction and non-fiction, along with a prompt card to help parents as they read to their child. The prompt cards will emphasize vocabulary words and interaction before, during, and after reading all with the goal of increasing and developing children’s oral language and literacy skills. St. James has 20 four-year-olds and 16 three-year-olds enrolled.
