People who smoke are urged to quit Thursday during the American Cancer Society’s 43rd Annual Great American Smokeout. Smokers are encouraged to use this day as the first in their quitting journey. According to Prelude Behavioral Services, 16.7% of adult Iowans smoke. Prevention Specialist with Prelude Behavioral Services Sarah Smith says that quitting is difficult and can take several attempts before being successful. She adds, “There are now more former smokers than current ones.” Quitline Iowa is a free service that is available to help smokers quit using tobacco by providing support, making a quit plan, and giving information on medications that may help.
