The Highland School Board issued an apology to Abigail Sojka for violating her right to free speech.

At Monday’s school board meeting, Board President Nate Robinson began by reading an apology to Sojka, “The Highland Community School Board acknowledges that it likely violated Abigail Sojka’s first amendment right through board policies. This occurred by the board’s refusal to allow comments about personnel matters during board meetings over the last four years. As a result, the Board has amended its policies to comply with the First Amendment. The Board apologizes to Ms. Sojka and her family.” Sojka filed a lawsuit after the Highland School Board stopped her from speaking negatively about a Highland employee. The matter settled in October. The lawsuit also inspired a policy change where the school board may not impede a statement being made by a member of the public, as long as they’re staying within the time constraints and not being threatening.
