The highest percentage of adults volunteering since 2005 was recorded in 2017 with a worth estimated at $1.32 billion. In 2017, 41.53% of Iowans spent time volunteering to help others. According to Volunteer Iowa, over one million volunteers gave 56.2 million hours of service last year. The Corporation for National and Community Service began the volunteer study in 2005, examining volunteer trends across the nation. Iowa is now second in the nation in volunteer rates among parents with 58.% actively volunteering. Those volunteer efforts included fundraising for nonprofit organizations; mentoring youth; providing transportation for others; and collecting, distributing, preparing, or serving food. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities in Washington including assisting at the Chamber of Commerce, helping with events with Main Street Washington, taking care of animals at PAWS and More, coaching youth sports, and lending a hand with civic organizations.
