Wapello Man Survives Wreck, Two Others Killed

A Wapello man was transported to the hospital by helicopter after a two-vehicle wreck in Johnson County. According to the Iowa State Patrol, 20-year-old Jose Gamez Avila of Wapello was injured in a wreck that took two lives. At 8:37 p.m. Thursday a Dodge Caravan driven by 30-year-old Tori Smith of Mediapolis and a Kia driven by 50-year-old Kirk Flom of Solon collided head-on. Smith’s vehicle was southbound on Highway 1 near 210th Street Northeast when it crossed the center line and struck Flom’s vehicle. Smith and Flom were both wearing seat belts but did not survive, and they were taken by the medical examiner’s office to the University of Iowa morgue. Avila was taken by AirCare to the University of Iowa Hospital.

Johnson County Sheriff’s personnel, Iowa City Police, Solon Fire and Rescue, Johnson County Medical Examiner, AirCare, Linn County Sheriff’s personnel, and Mt. Vernon Police assisted at the scene.
