This time of year anybody is susceptible to becoming stranded in their vehicle, and being prepared can mean the difference between life and death.

An example of being prepared and knowledgeable to survive happened over Thanksgiving weekend. Terry Harnish of Nova Scotia was visiting her friends in Fairfield over Thanksgiving and her vehicle got stuck in the mud, a blizzard then blanketed the area. She was stranded for three days in her vehicle before being rescued, according to the Fairfield Police Department. Lieutenant Colin Smith says the best thing Hubbard did was she stayed in her vehicle, especially during the snowstorm. Having an emergency kit in your car can also buy some time. The necessities, according to Smith, are blankets, food, and water. Hubbard was able to survive on snacks that she had in the car and by occasionally turn on the car to provide heat. Smith adds to not run your car unless necessary, to preserve fuel. If you’re stuck in snow and run your car, make sure the exhaust is clear of snow and debris so the vehicle can properly ventilate.
