A delivery of a baby in rural Kalona almost turned tragic.

Just after midnight, early Wednesday the Johnson County Sheriff’s office received a call that there was a woman in labor near the intersection of Highway 1 and 520th Street. Johnson County Deputy Doran Williams arrived shortly after the baby was delivered in the woman’s vehicle. Williams noticed the baby’s umbilical cord was preventing the baby from breathing properly and he was able to safely move it. After Williams was able to get the baby back to breathing normally, the mother and her baby were transported to the University of Iowa Hospital. Both the mother and baby are in good health.
