Mid-Prairie is updating it’s conduct policy for students involved in athletics, arts, and student leadership.
Currently, the conduct policy states that the first violation of the policy means a suspension for one-third of the season for students in sports and arts, a second violation means missing two-thirds of the season, and a third offense leads to a season-long suspension. Activities Director Tyler Holtz thinks the current policy is too vague, “I have to be the one who administers this. As I read the first one, it wasn’t clear to me how to administer [the policy] to specific things. It said for a third of season for a first offense. My question was, does that mean a third of competition or a third of the days, weeks, months?” The proposed changes states that for athletics, the suspension will be based on the competition season, with rounding up for an uneven amount. For example, if a sports season has 20 competitions a student will be ineligible for seven of those for his or her first violation.
The changes address activities and student leadership separately. Holtz said that since their seasons are not as defined as sports seasons, the policy needed clarity. For these students, the discipline will be handed down based on the number of days of the session. The Mid-Prairie School Board approved the first reading of the policy. A second reading will be part of the January 14th board meeting.
