Antifreeze leaks are common in vehicles, but can be detrimental to pets if it’s not properly monitored.

According to Dr. Fay Vittetoe, who spent more than 41 years as a veterinarian, dogs may be attracted to the sight and smell of antifreeze. Antifreeze is typically a blue or green liquid. Vittetoe says the consequences could be severe, “It doesn’t take much antifreeze from a leaking radiator hose in the garage or on the driveway to poison the dog and to cause them to go into renal failure.” Some of the symptoms of renal failure in dogs include, but are not limited to, dehydration, vomiting, and reduced appetite. If you believe your pet has ingested antifreeze, seek veterinarian assistance immediately. If you find antifreeze on your driveway or in your garage, find an absorbent material to soak it up, like kitty litter or sand, and dispose of it right away.
