Snow can make walking outdoors a challenge.

According to the National Council on Aging, falls are the leading cause for fatal injuries in Americans over 65 years old. Owner of JET Physical Therapy Eric Turner says this time of year he begins to see more injuries related to falls. Turner advises to limit trips outside and to be aware of what you can and can’t handle.

If you do happen to fall, Turner says there are symptoms that warrant an immediate doctor’s visit, “Someone that would have difficulty putting weight on their lower body or lower extremity, somebody that is not able to raise their arm away from their side, those are some definite things that probably need medical attention within a very short amount of time from the injury.” Turner adds that there are a wide array of injuries that can come from a fall including muscle strains, broken bones, and all the way up the ladder to head trauma.
