The bell tower on the Washington County Courthouse will be getting a new roof this spring. In September of 2016, the courthouse roof’s slate tiles were replaced with Brava composite tiles. The composite tiles look like slate tiles, but weigh less and have a 50-year warranty. Washington County Auditor Dan Widmer explained that the bell tower roof was not replaced with the rest of the roof and it is necessary at this time, “No, they were all coming off the other parts of the courthouse. We just can’t just take the chance of one of those pieces or a whole tile hitting someone.” The Brava tiles will again be used and the goal is to have the roof look exactly as it does now, with multi-colored tiles in the same pattern. The estimate from Pa’s Construction of Hiawatha is $79,460. It is the same company that replaced the roof in 2016. Additional bids were not sought. Work will begin as soon as weather allows and will take approximately two weeks to complete. The Washington County Board of Supervisors approved the project unanimously.
