The Mid-Prairie boys and girls basketball teams were each a winner at home Tuesday over Tipton.

The Golden Hawk girls got the win 54-47. Mid-Prairie started fast, opening the game with a 9-0 run, Tipton got within one going to the second quarter and the Golden Hawks were up three at the half. The Golden Hawks outscored Tipton 13-6 in the third quarter, stretching their lead to as many as 20. In the final frame, the Tigers would cut the lead to six twice but would get no closer as Mid-Prairie put the game away at the line. After the game, Mid-Prairie head girls basketball coach Stephen Bender highlighted his team’s defensive effort. “I thought our defensive effort was great, when you hold them to 17 points in the first half and Amanda Smith and Emily Hermsen below their averages. It was an outstanding job of executing our gameplan.”

The Golden Hawks were led in the win by Maddie Nonnenmann with 16 points, Shae Becker and Myah Lugar each added 11. With the win the Golden Hawks are now 10-5 on the year.

The Mid-Prairie boys scored their third win in a row taking down the Tigers 71-67 in overtime. Mid-Prairie started quickly with a 9-2 run but by half, the Tigers had come back to take a three point lead at 23-20. The Tigers would extended that lead to 13 in the third quarter behind a big frame from Andrew Stewart who had 12 in the frame. Down a dozen going to the fourth quarter the Hawks started to chip away. Mid-Prairie would get the game even at 58 on a Cale Robertson three point goal and in the final minute each team had a chance to win the game but couldn’t convert offensively, sending the game to overtime. In OT, Mid-Prairie got five big points from Dominick Pickard and found enough defense to get the win. After the game, Mid-Prairie head coach Daren Lambert talked about the team win. “You’re fighting through and you’re not sure how it’s going to end. I’m proud of the way we finished the game. Sometimes you have to go out and win games like that. This is the first time that we have beaten Tipton since I have been here and a lot of these guys started with me as sophomores. It’s sharing the basketball it’s been what Brad Tornow has been doing all season as a facilitator. Tonight when we needed those moments of guys finishing around the rim, Brad was doing it. Tom did a great job of sealing. Dominick Pickard had two big baskets in overtime. It was a team effort.”

Mid-Prairie was led by Tom Butters with 16 points and 17 rebounds for another double double. Cale Robertson posted a team best 19 points including three, three point goals and Brad Tornow added a career high 18 points, with 16 of those coming in the second half. With the win, the Golden Hawks are now 8-6. The Mid-Prairie boys and girls are both scheduled to travel to Camanche Friday.
