The Jefferson County Health Department is handing out free test kits to spread awareness for radon awareness month.

Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that can be found in almost all kinds of soil. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer death for non-smokers in the United States, killing more than 21,000 people annually. To help combat this, Jefferson County is handing out 50 air test kits to Jefferson County residents at their Environment Health Office. Radon testing kits are available to purchase through the Washington County Environmental Health Department.
