The Kalona City Council has set adding more sidewalks and trails as one of their top priorities moving forward in 2019.

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says he’s been working with the council on what they want to accomplish, “We’re working with Washington County on a master trail plan. We have some sidewalk plans in place that we’re going to revisit, and look at how we can provide more sidewalks and trail inventory within the city limits. The council is going to take an active look at that.” When discussing the design for the Valley View subdivision in December, the council made it a priority that every street should have a sidewalk and proper crosswalks. Work will begin this spring with replacing the sidewalks along C Avenue between 5th and 6th Street. After that, according to the updated city comprehensive plan, the top priority regarding maintaining sidewalks will be making sure sidewalks around Kalona Elementary and Mid-Prairie Middle School are in good condition.
