Accumulating snow may cause hazardous travel conditions this weekend in southeast Iowa. According to the National Weather Service, potential impacts of the snow Friday afternoon through Saturday include blowing and drifting snow, low visibilities, and bitterly cold air. Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management has shared winter weather safety tips including staying indoors when possible, maintain at least half a tank of gas in your vehicle at all times, and keep an emergency supply kit in your car. Washington County Emergency Management Coordinator Marissa Reisen says those supply kits should include bottled water, extra layers of clothing, warm blankets, non-perishable food, an ice scraper, kitty litter, and a small shovel. Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management also advises to not drive in bad weather if it’s not necessary, as the leading cause of death during winter storms is transportation accidents.
