Since 1970, January has annually been observed as National Blood Donor Month by the American Red Cross. Every year they honor those who regularly donate blood or platelets, while encouraging others to give. The event was originally created because winter is one of the most difficult times of the year to collect enough blood products. This is due to a combination of inclement weather resulting in canceled blood drives and appointments, and the onset of cold and influenza season making people too unhealthy to donate.

The Red Cross hopes that bringing awareness to the need of donors will encourage those who have never given before to roll up their sleeve and donate. They remind people that blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Platelets can be given every seven days, up to 24 times a year. Eligible donors are individuals aged 17 and older, weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in generally good health. To find blood centers in the area, click the link below.
