Anna Mae (Sister Mary Janet) Mangold, age 97, of Aurora formerly of Washington died Tuesday November 10, 2009 in Aurora, Illinois following a decline in health.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held 10:30 am Monday November 16, 2009 at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Father Paul Appel officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 10:30 am Monday at St. James Catholic Church. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Anna Mae was born on January 26, 1912 in Washington, Iowa the daughter of John S. and Helen (Henke) Mangold. Throughout her junior high and high school years, she played the organ for masses at St. James Church. She graduated from Washington High School in 1930 and from St. Ambrose University in Davenport in 1934 with a Bachelor’s degree in nursing. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1937 and took the name Sister Mary Janet Mangold. She was well known throughout the Midwest as one of the best Mercy nurses in her field. She worked in many hospitals including Davenport; Iowa City; Marshalltown; Janesville, Wisconsin; and in Aurora and Chicago, Illinois. Her specialty was Obstetrics and Surgery. After she gave up nursing, she was known on the south side of Chicago as the Sister of Mercy who worked with the poor. All those in need knew that she would help. She dedicated her life to the service of the poor and the sick. She retired in 2003.

She is survived by her sister, Sally McClure of Washington, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and four brothers, Leo, Raymond, John, and Francis Mangold.
