The threat of carbon monoxide poisoning is highest in the winter months, particularly when temperatures are low, according to Alliant Energy. The poisoning occurs when heating equipment malfunctions and only a carbon monoxide detector can alert inhabitants of the odorless gas. Alliant recommends placing a detector on each floor of a home or business.
