Last year there were six traffic fatalities during the 4th of July weekend, three of which were alcohol related, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. This year over 250 law enforcement agencies across the state are taking part in a special Traffic Enforcement Program. The sTEP provides funding for more officers to work more hours on roadways during a time of increased travel and more traffic crashes. The Iowa Governor’s Safety Bureau is urging citizens to buckle up and drive responsibly this holiday weekend.
