Chalk up another victory for the Columbus Wildcats, although the Columbus boys’ team had to win some close calls to take the championship at Tuesday’s Wapello Co-Ed track and field meet. Columbus ran away with the top team score at 207 points, 108 more than second-place Wilton.

Senior Jeff Hoback and junior Kaden Amigon traded places atop the sprints. Hoback won the 100-meter dash, but his top time of 11.19 seconds was only two one-hundredths of a second better than Amigon. Amigon claimed the 200-meter dash in 22.74 seconds, almost a half-second better than Hoback. The junior also won the long jump with a top leap of 21 feet two inches.

Junior Cole Storm was a winner in the 800 meters with a top time of two minutes and 17.45 seconds, but only by three one-hundredths of a second. Classmate Damin Vergara claimed a distance event of his own, winning the 3,200 in 10:48

The Wildcats got another victory from senior Triston Miller, taking the 110-meter hurdles in 14.62 seconds. Freshman Alexander Rees also won the 400 hurdles in a few ticks over an even minute.

While the Columbus girls didn’t have as much team success, they did get victories from freshman Naveah Garza, winning the 400 meters in 1:08, and sophomore Lily Coil, winning the 100 hurdles in just under 18 seconds.
