The Cradle of Hope Pregnancy Resource Center in Mount Pleasant was founded by Peggy Knudsen in 2006. What began as a system of support for women experiencing an unplanned pregnancy has evolved into so much more.

With locations also in Fairfield, Fort Madison, and Burlington, Cradle of Hope provides such services as pregnancy tests and limited ultrasounds. An earn-while-you-learn program offers classes to both mothers and fathers tailored to their situation. Completion of classes allows participants to earn “mommy money” and “daddy bucks” that can be redeemed for items in their store, including clothing, furniture, and toys.

Despite these supports already in place, Knudsen believes that displacement of young mothers is an issue that needs to be addressed. “We are seeing them couch jumping, maybe going from one basement to another, and they feel stuck,” she said.

In an effort to combat the homeless mother situation, Cradle of Hope has spent the last year searching for a site for a maternity home. According to Knudsen, “We definitely want something where we could house at least six mothers.” While it is uncertain whether they will be able to purchase a home that meets their requirements, or build their own on a plot of land, Knudsen hopes to have the home ready by the middle of 2023.
