Popping, cracking, and booms could be heard across the area over the weekend as people used fireworks legally in Iowa.

While fireworks sale and use was made legal by the state legislature this year, cities have the jurisdiction to limit or prohibit the use with local ordinances. Fireworks calls kept area law enforcement officers busy with over 15 calls to the safety center with concerns. In one instance officers advised residents of the ordinance and fireworks were seized to be disposed of in the 800 block of West Monroe Street, Washington, Friday evening.

In Washington, the code says no one under the age of 18 is to discharge fireworks without parental supervision and you can only set off fireworks on property you own or where consent has been given. Fireworks cannot be set off in the street or on public property. The dates and time limits for fireworks use in the City of Washington are June 30th to July 8th, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. although the hours are extended until 11 p.m. on July 4th, and then on New Year’s Eve from December 31st at 9 a.m. thru 12:30 a.m. January 1st.
