Congratulations to former Mid-Prairie boy’s basketball coach Don Showalter for being named the 2012 United States Olympic Committee’s Volunteer Coach of the Year.

Showalter who is also a Mid-Prairie graduate recently went to Iowa City High to begin coaching their team. He has spent 38 seasons in high school basketball with a 562-294 record.

While volunteering with the Olympic committee, Showalter has coached the U16 and U17 teams since 2009 and in those years coached the U17 team to World championships in 2012 and 2010, and coached the U16 teams to Americas championships in 2013, 2011 and 2009.

Showalter said this is a very big honor for him that had a lot to do with the people around him.

“You know it is very humbling any time to get an award like that, it means there were a lot of people very helpful in you getting the award, and you can’t have success by yourself, and a lot of people went into that, players and coaches,” Showalter said.

Showalter is currently instructing the Snow Valley basketball camps at Wartburg College.
