An attempt was made Tuesday to rescue two dogs believed to have been stranded on an island in the Mississippi River. After not being able to find help closer to home, the owner of the dogs, an Illinois woman who previously lived in Mount Pleasant, contacted Henry County Animal Rescue.

Gary Ruth, director of the non-profit, agreed to donate his time. He then located an airboat to reach the island, but didn’t have the funding to rent it. After a Facebook post describing the situation, the organization quickly raised the $300 needed to use the boat.

Ruth says they only found prints left by the Blue Heeler and Black Labrador/Golden Retriever mix during the search. He adds they’re hoping the dogs were able to make their way across the thin ice to Iowa or back to Illinois.

If you’ve located either dog, call Henry County Animal Rescue at 319-537-0200.
