With tomorrow being the first day of fall, Iowa is joining 45 other states in a special observance.  This day known as Falls Prevention Awareness Day is a way to stress the importance of falls experienced by Iowans especially as the population ages.

Lynn Fisher from Washington County Public Health says when someone experiences a fall at home it has a big impact on the economy.  She says approximately $92 million is spent each year for hospital costs and emergency room visits account for nearly $35 million.

Fisher says there are steps that can be taken to prevent falls at home like not getting up too fast, having your vision checked, having and using handrails on stairs along with having a regular exercise routine to help with balance and strength.

She adds injuries from falls can lead to loss of mobility and independence.  To find out more about preventing falls, contact Washington County Public Health.
