The Kalona and Wellman fire departments and Kalona QRS and Washington County Ambulance Service also responded to a grain dryer on fire at 10:54 p.m. at 2048 155th Street. This comes as southeast Iowa received the least amount of precipitation last week with warmer than average temperatures across the state, according to the most recent Crop Progress and Conditions report from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture levels rated 10% very short, 30% short, 59% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture levels rated 15% very short, 37% short, 48% adequate, and 0% surplus. The U.S. Drought Monitor shows almost all of Washington County having an abnormally dry level of intensity.
