The Washington Fire Department says last week’s “Operation Edith” was more successful than last year. Washington Volunteer Firefighter and Fire Prevention Week Committee Head Doug Sanders says last week, students at Lincoln, Stewart and St. James Elementary were educated on ways to stay safe during a house fire. Students were specifically instructed on EDITH, “exit drills in the home.” Students were told to have two exit plans and a pre-selected family meeting place outside of their home. If students made a plan with their family, a porch light was left on Wednesday night. Sanders says the fire department counted 680 porch lights Wednesday, more than 80 this time last year.
