Operation Backpack, a group which provides backpacks full of food to children in need, will be hosting the event, Musicians Against Hunger, on tomorrow. Local elementary and high school students will be performing along with the Praise Band, along with many other bands and musicians, at the United Presbyterian Church from 1:30 to 4:00.
Iowa City is once again looking at allowing chickens to be raised in city limits. But Iowa City doesn’t have the monopoly on the desire for fresh eggs. In fact, as a whole, Iowans have been supporting local grown food in bigger numbers. Farmers’ Market Master Bob Shepard says in 2004, Iowa had only 80 farmer’s markets. Now there are over 200.
Iowa is one of only 12 states without an emergency food system in place. Several groups, including the Food Bank of Iowa have been pushing lawmakers to draft a bill to start a $2 million dollar program that would be incorporated into Iowa’s existing network of emergency food providers.
