Frozen pipes are a major concern for homeowners during the winter months. The American Red Cross says frozen pipes can be avoided through some preventative measures. They say pipes in crawl spaces and attics need to be insulated during the warmers months. Heat tape, or controlled heat cables can be used to wrap pipes. The Red Cross says if pipes are frozen, don’t take a chance. If you turn your faucets on and nothing happens, leave them on and call a plumber. If a water pipe bursts, you’ll need to turn the water main off. You should never try to thaw a pipe with a torch or an open flame.
