Two students getting home from school are being credited for alerting officials to a house fire in Frytown Wednesday afternoon.

Kalona Fire Chief Jerry Zahradnek says because of the Mid-Prairie School District’s early dismissal Wednesday the students arrived at their home at 1524 Angle Road Southwest shortly before 2:30 p.m. to discover the fire. Zahradnek says they immediately evacuated the home and flagged down a neighbor who called 911.

Zahradnek says the fire was contained to a bedroom and closet on the main floor of the house. He says there was some smoke damage, but little water damage to the home. Firefighters were on the scene for just over two hours and Zahradnek says the cause of the fire hasn’t officially been determined yet, but appears to be electrical in nature. No one was home when the fire started and there were no injuries. Riverside, Wellman and Hills fire departments assisted at the scene along with Kalona First Responders and Johnson County Ambulance.
