High temperatures and low dissolved oxygen levels resulted in a fish kill in Odessa Lake. The 3,000 acre Mississippi River backwater lake lost around 19,000 fish the night of July 7th. 96 % of those being Gizzard Shad, an abundant bait fish, with the second largest group affected being Blue Gill.

According to Fisheries Biologist Chad Dolan considering the contributing factors this is not unusual. Dolan says using the outlet and inlet to exchange some of the water can help to a certain degree in preventing this from happening again.
