world-autism-day

Those with autism are being celebrated today during World Autism Day, and the Highland Community School District is joining the celebration. Highland School nurse Cindy Peiffer says 1 in 54 children are born with autism, and awareness days like these help to educate others about these individuals. Peiffer tells KCII News why World Autism Day is important, “It draws attention and educates people, and it helps to bring it out to the forefront so that people understand why a certain child acts a certain way. So that we can help them get through their day. If we can understand that loud noises are hard for certain students, then we can try to help them through their day to make the day not so stressful for them.” In celebration, the school is encouraging students to decorate their windows or doors with a theme of love, kindness, and acceptance.
