Iowa’s annual winter home heating moratorium ends Sunday, April 1st.

The Iowa Utilities Board is reminding energy assistance customers who are currently protected from service disconnection to pay their utility bills and contact their utility provider for payment options to avoid disconnection April 2nd. Washington County Supervisor Richard Young said HACAP helped over 400 households with a portion of their costs from October to February with the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, with $202,500, “That averages $467.66 and they helped 433 households in Washington County with their heat. And they also helped families put in five furnaces and that was $6,000. And they helped weatherize six homes at $10,887, and that is just here in Washington County for HACAP.”

Under the winter moratorium law, qualified customers in Iowa with LIHEAP or the Weatherization Assistance Program are protected from their natural gas or electric service being shut off from November 1st to April 1st.
