National Children’s Dental Health Month is February. Sheila Temple with Washington County Public Health explains that the state of Iowa has the I-Smile program to help children access dental care. The program is for children ages zero to 21 and for pregnant women.

She says it is recommended that children see a dentist by age 1 or within six months of the first tooth erupting. Temple adds, children should be brushing twice each day, with parents’ help up to age 8, and flossing once a day when teeth are touching.
