In record low temperatures, an emergency shelter for warmth is open in Washington. Crews had to go out to restore power in Washington and Keokuk Counties. According to Alliant Energy, 233 customers were without power at 8:12 p.m. Tuesday north of Keota and Harper. At approximately 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, 910 customers didn’t have electricity in southwest Washington.

In response to the power outages, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Washington opened its doors at 3 a.m. for anyone needing a safe, warm place to go until power was restored. Pastor Maureen Howard tells KCII News that Immanuel Lutheran Church will be available through Thursday should anyone need a warm place to go. Howard asks that overnight should you need shelter, call the Washington County safety center at 653-2107 and they’ll arrange for the church to be open. Immanuel Lutheran Church is handicap accessible.
