With the help of a federal grant a public awareness program in Keokuk County has seen substantial results. For the last four years at the schools in the county the KC STAAR, or Keokuk County Schools Tactics for Alcohol Abuse Reduction, grant has been awarded to address underage and binge drinking among 6th through 12th graders.

In their latest survey, 10% of the 6th-12th graders said they engaged in binge drinking compared to 25% in 2008. Also students who saw no problem with alcohol went from 24% to 10% during that same time period.

Even though the KC STAAR program is over, the schools plan to keep similar drug education in their curriculums.
