The Iowa House has approved the use of lead shot in mourning dove hunting. There is a lot of debate over this issue with one side saying that the lead shot is harmful to animals, and the other side saying it doesn’t effect animals at the population level. While the IDNR has made a statement saying they have found no evidence that lead shot harms animals at the population level, studies from Saving Our Avian Resources have shown that bald eagles who scavenge carcasses have shown abnormally high lead levels. The bill allowing lead shot has also passed a Senate Committee and is now open for debate in the Senate. KCII will continue to follow this story and bring you more information as it becomes official.
