House File 2334 has passed subcommittee and will now go on for further consideration, which if adopted would provide psychologists in Iowa the authority to prescribe medications. The house file reads, “A licensed psychologist holding a conditional prescription certificate may prescribe psychotropic medication under the supervision of a licensed physician.”

Dr. Trevor Martin, member of the Washington County Board of Health, spoke warily of the measure at Thursday’s Board of Health meeting, saying there needs to be oversight and training. He explained a psychiatrist has a medical background and does a full residency, while a psychologist does not. Martin said it would be a big change in Iowa and potential for a safety issue.
