The Washington Streets Committee held a public hearing yesterday afternoon on the proposed lane configuration on Madison Street from 4 lanes down to 3.  Committee Chair and Councilor Karen Wilson-Johnson says about 20 citizens who live along Madison Street expressed concern on how the changes would affect them.  She says some of the proposed changes presented have persuaded some residents to now be more in favor of the new configuration.

Many residents were pleased to hear that a buffer zone between the curb and sidewalk would create greater safety for pedestrians.  She says the new lane configuration might slow down traffic as well.

Wilson-Johnson says another meeting will be held at a future date to present drawings of the proposed changes to the stretch of road.  She says this change to the lane configuration could happen after IDOT resurfaces Madison Street in fiscal year 2012 and if city officials authorize the plan.
